Tiff
Format of image of the Bitmap type developed by the company Aldus (now Adobe), composed of beacons and allowing the compression of images of important sizes.
Introduction: Format tiff or HAIR is a format of display file of Bitmap type (not-vectorial). It was developed about 1987 by the Aldus company (now repurchased by Adobe). It is an old graphic format, making it possible to store images of the Bitmap type of important size (more than 4 Go compressed), without loss of quality and this, under all the platforms and peripherals. Characteristics: Format tiff makes it possible to store images in black and white, in True Color (real Colors, to 32 Bits by pixels) as well as Indexées images. Moreover, this format allows the use of several spaces of colors: the RVB, Lab, the CMYK and the YUV. The principle of the format HAIR consists in defining beacons describing the characteristics of the image. These beacons make it possible to store information concerning dimensions of the image, the number of colors used, the correction gamma and the type of compression. Several algorithms of compression can be used, like compression LZW, JPEG, UIT-T, REL, CCITT G3&4 and Packbits, or none. Use: This type of format is rather rare on the Web. It is in general used in the field of printing works. From their high definition, images tiff can be redimensionnées with a programme of page-setting, like QuarkXPress, used by the printers.
