Linux was created at the origin by Finnish Linus Torvald whereas it was student, at the beginning of the years 1990, like a free and free alternative to the cores for operating system of at the time existing the UNIX type. By extension, Linux usually indicates the free operating system GNU/Linux, but it is advisable to recall that it is a simplification which is incorrect. Without the software of the project GNU, Linux would be of indeed only one interest very limited for the users of micro-computers. Today, of the thousands of developers take part in the whole world in the evolution of Linux, which is without possible dispute the software headlight of the community of the Free one. Today become a recognized ripe, GNU/Linux constitutes an alternative of choice to the operating systems owners marketed by Microsoft or APPLE, to quote only these two companies. From day in day, Linux is made more convivial and accessible to general public. On a more anecdotic level, the mascot of Linux is a penguin (the animal) which is called Tux ("tuxedo", English smoking).
