 IPv4

Definition

IPv4 for Internet Protocol v4 is as its name indicates it a protocol which identifies addresses known as IP on Internet. IP addresses are coded on 32 bits (4 bytes) of the form xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Description

Each series of xxx corresponds to a byte (8 bits) that is to say a number between 0 and 255. At one moment given on Internet each computer connected at an address IP of this form. For example, one can have 85.12.65.124 or 245.111.0.6 This protocol thus makes it possible to manage nearly 4 billion 300 million different addresses (2^32 exactly) With his origin, one thought that it would be amply sufficient to manage all the computers connected on Internet but since a few years, a new IPv6 protocol coded on 128 bits is under development bus Ipv4 starts to show his limits.
