IGN
The IGN is a Publicly-owned establishment of the State with Administratif character placed under supervision of the Ministry for the Equipment, Transport, the Regional planning, Tourism and of the Sea Its mission of public utility is described by decree.
My missions of the IGN are as follows: - To establish and maintain the geodetic networks and levelling relating to the national system of reference of geographical, planimetric and altimetric co-ordinates, and to disseminate corresponding information. - To realize, renew periodically and diffuse the air photographic cover of the whole of the own territory. - To constitute and update on the whole of the territory the geographical data bases and the cartographic funds whose list is fixed by decree of the minister charged with the equipment, after opinion of the national Council of geographical information, in particular the reference frame on a large scale. - To undertake activities of research and development in the field of geographical information, with regard to in particular the observation of the Earth and positioning by satellite. - To manage documentation related to the activities defined above, in particular that of the national photographic library. - To direct the activities of the national School of geographical sciences, under the conditions fixed by decree of the minister charged with the equipment and the minister in charge of the budget. - To contribute to the work undertaken in France and within an international framework organization standardization of geographical information.
